There are a few places near me it’s okay to drink in, but they are quite ‘hipstery’ and (Hell Below, Eaten By Monsters, Moo, Concrete, etc...) often inhabited by students. The old quiet pubs in the vicinity have either closed or turned into ‘local’ pubs where unless you know many of the people inside them, you won’t feel very comfortable.
Generally I have a good time if I’m with certain colleagues and former colleagues where we cab shoot the breeze and have some good food and great wines, whiskeys and vodkas. Lol.

Svend I remember looking at a map of pubs in the UK and was amazed how dense it was. Although I can’t remember if you are on the main land or not.

I’m right at the top of England, if you cross the border, you’ve gone too far.
Pubs are closing at the rate of knotts here (several a week nationally). Hipster bars open, do well for a year or two then close, open under new management and new name, then the cycle continues.
The pub used to be the centre of the community. You’d finish work, have a pint or two at the pub, then go home for dinner. In the evening you’d meet all your friends, neighbours and colleagues over a few pints, a game or few of pool, maybe a darts match or two.
Times change, you either change with them or you get left behind.

Bull Falls Brewery, sure, they only have their beer and some select wines, but man is the beer good, and you can get the best local pizza delivered so it’s a total win.

I don’t drink but everytime I’m in Glasgow, I enjoy going with friends to Lebowski’s. They have Bundaberg (which tastes even better in the UK for some reason) and a Big Lebowski themed selection of white russians.

The Fridge, located in Kitchen for all my favorite beers. Also, The Cabinet Above the Fridge, also in Kitchen- that place has good whiskey.

Actually just had a country analysis project for a business class. My group proposed Buffalo Wild Wings entering the UK. One of the points of our research is that the pub culture in the UK is going away, and people are trading for casual dining.

The pub culture has been dying for the last 20+ years. At first it was villages turning into commuter villages and new people not supporting the village pub, village shop or village post office.
There is a village a few miles out from the city that opens a couple of hours during the day and has a part time post office set up at the back (read, one table with a villager sat bored to sell the occasional book of stamps and give out forms that are needed and help the occasional OAP villager with understanding things) then close and open with a more restaurant atmosphere later on.
In the towns and cities the pubs changed with the smoking ban and culture of the pub no longer being the centre of community or central gathering point like it used to be back 70-80s and earlier.
Bistros, cafes and hipster bars are taking over (few stay long and change hands hile some others are taking off rather well).
Belted (American diner theme)
Hell Below (bistro)
Moo, Le Galls and Eaten By Monsters (hipster bar, bistro and hipster/bistro)
Dutch Uncle (bistro)
Creme Cafe
The Old Engine House (coffee shop)
Watts Coffee Shop (best coffee shop in Carlisle since 1865).
